The call for enrolment in third-cycle study programs is published annually, usually in February for the following academic year.
Applicants for enrolment to doctoral studies are required to submit an application for enrolment through the eVŠ portal within the deadline set in the application for enrolment. Detailed registration instructions are available here.

Before enrolling in the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Study Programme in the Humanities and Social Sciences, the candidate must select a mentor with whom an individualized study program is designed.
To assist candidates in finding a mentor, a list of potential mentors is published here for academic year 2024/2025. The list is constantly updated.
Tuition fee for 4-year doctoral programme is 10.600 EUR for the whole programme:
- Year 1: 3.400 EUR
- Year 2: 2.600 EUR
- Year 3: 2.200 EUR
- Year 4: 2.400 EUR
The admitted students sign a learning agreement and pay the first-year tuition fee. Students pay the tuition for the second, third and fourth year when they advance to the next year.
Tuition fee for each academic year can be paid in 3 instalments – first upon enrolment at the faculty (55%), second in February (22,5%), third in May (22,5%),. The tuition fee does not include the mandatory health insurance.
Tuition fees and other costs of enrolment into doctoral study programmes at the University of Ljubljana are published in the Services Price List for Students.
The invoice is sent to the student's email in pdf format and is available in the student information system (VIS) in pdf format.
The Decree on the co-funding of doctoral studies (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No. 22/17) and act amending the Higher Education Act regulate the co-funding of officially recognised doctoral study programmes. More information on co-financing of doctoral studies is available here.
In the academic year 2024/2025 there are 244 places on 64 study fields available at Interdisciplinary Doctoral Study Program in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
Enrolment conditions
Enrolment in the doctoral programme in the Humanities and Social Sciences is open to candidates who have completed:
- second-cycle study programmes;
- study programmes leading to an academic higher education qualification, adopted before 11 June 2004;
- study programmes leading to a specialisation adopted before 11 June 2004, and who have already completed a professional higher education programme; for enrolment in third-cycle doctoral study programmes, the relevant body of the member faculty sets course units totalling 30 to 60 ECTS credits on the proposal of the field of study coordinator responsible for doctoral studies;
- study programmes leading to a Master of Science degree or specialisation after completion of a study programme for obtaining an academic higher education qualification as adopted before 11 June 2004. For these candidates, the relevant body of the member faculty recognises course units totalling at least 60 ECTS credits on the proposal of the field of study coordinator responsible for doctoral studies;
- a study programme that leads to professions regulated by EU directives, or another integrated master’s degree study programme assessed at 300 ECTS credits.
The doctoral programme is also open to graduates from another university in Slovenia or a university in another country in accordance with the conditions prescribed for students from the Republic of Slovenia. The equivalence of prior learning in another country will be established by means of the procedure for the recognition of foreign qualifications for the purposes of continuing education in accordance with the Statute of the University of Ljubljana.
Prior to enrolment in the doctoral programme in the Humanities and Social Sciences the student must acquire (co)mentor’s consent and send a filled and signed form »Consent of the (co)mentor« together with the other required documentation to the Administrative Office for Doctoral Study (Third-Cycle).The form »Consent of the (co)mentor« is avaiable here.
Selection Criteria in case of restricted enrolment
Candidates will be selected based on their success in completed studies, as well as their scientific and expert achievements. Individual elements of selection will be evaluated in the following manner:
- Study success (grade point average) – 50% weighting in:
- second-cycle study programmes;
- study programmes leading to an academic higher education qualification, adopted before 11 June 2004;
- study programmes leading to specialisation after completion of a professional higher education programme adopted before 11 June 2004;
- study programmes leading to a Master of Science degree or specialisation after completion of a study programme for obtaining a university qualification as adopted before 11 June 2004;
- study programmes leading to professions regulated by EU directives, or other integrated master's degree programmes consisting of 300 ECTS credits.
- Grade obtained in the oral selection exam (interview) before an expert committee for the field in which the candidate is enrolling – 50% of the weighting.
On the proposal of the, the Committee for doctoral studies of the member faculty decides on the applicant's suitability.

- 2nd application deadline: from June 17 to August 19 2024 (included) for citizens of Slovenia and EU.

All candidates wishing to enrol in doctoral studies may apply regardless of whether they have already obtained their (second cycle or equivalent) degree at the time of application, as this is not a prerequisite for submission of an application. However, it is a requirement for enrolment in doctoral study programmes. Candidates are advised to submit the application if they expect to obtain their (second cycle or equivalent) degree by the deadlines specified in the call for enrolment.
In the application and admissions procedure for the 2024/2025 academic year, applications for enrolment and all the required supporting material should be submitted electronically via the eVŠ information system, if the applicant’s identity can be determined. The applicant’s identity will be verified based on the EMŠO (for Slovenian citizens) or a copy of their personal identity document (for EU citizens based on their personal ID or passport, and for non-EU citizens based on their passport).
Candidates will be notified of any requirement to supplement their applications via the e-mail address they provided in their application on the eVŠ portal. Instructions for submitting evidence and supporting material are posted here.

- Short CV with bibliography
- Copy of all acquired degree certificates
- Copy of Diploma Supplement or official Transcript of Records
- Outline of Ph.D. dissertation (of max 1000 words) with main bibliography

According to Assessment and Recognition of Education Act, candidates, holders of foreign qualifications (certificates obtained outside the Republic of Slovenia), who wish to enrol in doctoral study programmes of the Faculty of Arts, must obtain a decision on the recognition of foreign education for the purpose of further education. The procedure begins with submitting the application for enrolment on the eVŠ portal. Instructions are also available on the website of the University of Ljubljana.
The decision on the recognition obtained for the purpose of employment, does not replace the above-mentioned decision. For the purpose of further education, the candidate must (regardless of the decision that has already been obtained for the purpose of employment) obtain a decision on the recognition of education obtained abroad for the purpose of further education.
The admissions procedure will process and consider only those applications and requests for recognition of foreign education that are submitted in the eVŠ system by the end of the application deadline.
Candidates can attach to their application a scan or photograph of a personal identity document with their written consent on the eVŠ web portal as follows:
- citizens of EU Member States: personal ID or passport (page showing the candidate’s personal data, including name, surname, date and place of birth and citizenship),
- foreign citizens of non-EU Member States: passport (page showing the candidate’s personal data, including name, surname, date and place of birth and citizenship).
The education recognition procedure must be concluded before enrolment in the doctoral study programme.

- Scan/photo of the Bachelor diploma (scan all the pages of the document)
- Scan/photo of the Master diploma (scan all the pages of the document)
- Scan/photo of the Bachelor's diploma supplement, transcript of records or other relevant document in evidence of content and duration of education
- Scan/photo of the Master's diploma supplement, transcript of records or other relevant document in evidence of content and duration of education
- Scan/photo of chronological description of the completed education (prepared and signed by the candidate)
